The Conservation of Cigars in Cigar Cases and Humidors

Cigars should be treated like the best wines because they are also sensitive to the ambient conditions. In reality, they are like ripe fruit and depend on the temperature and humidity. The cigar is a biological product and can survive only in certain conditions. Cigars should be stored in dark places at a stable temperature, that is to say in a humidor.

A microclimate with a variable moisture level is created in the interior of the humidor as holes allow air circulation which helps to manage the stock. The more dehydrated the cigars, the more they should be kept in less humid places so that they can slowly regain their flexibility.

The conservation of cigars is very important aspect as it has repercussions on the draw, flavor and combustion and therefore, on the smoking experience. In fact, the major problem with conservation is the maintenance of the temperature of 16 to 18 ° C because the humidor does not have modern settings like some wine cellars do. In all cases, a good cigar humidor is a wise and necessary investment if you want to keep your cigars in ideal conditions.

What is a humidor?

A humidor is a box or container where cigars can be stored despite minimal ventilation.

It is equipped with a device which maintains the humidity level constant and with another device, called hydrometer, which can measure the moisture level.

From the outside, it is designed as a piano hinge with a thick cover and it is balanced so that the body does not turn.

The storage temperature of cigars is around 16, 18 ° C with a humidity level of 70-72%. This reconstruction of the tropical climate prevents the cigar from drying out and extends its shelf life. The humidor is a constant source of moisture and atmospheric pressure. All humidors contain rudimentary devices like sponges or plastic tubes that slowly release moisture. Apple cores or potatoes were formerly used.

How to choose a humidor

How to buy a humidor? You have to check if it is properly assembled. The angles must be straight and most importantly, it must be closed but not completely sealed because the air must circulate.

Weight: A cover can be a heavy handicap. A large opening could unbalance the humidor and the cigars could be thrown on the ground. Thus, it is better to opt for a humidor with a slight opening.
